Privacy in Argentina

June 30, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

Today I received a question about privacy in Argentina, specifically about the banking system. With the revelation that the US Treasury and the CIA have been spying on international wire transfers recently, I suppose banking privacy is on people’s minds.

Reader’s Question

I saw your blog about expatriating to Argentina, and really liked it and found it very helpful. It is no secret that many US Citzens are wanting away from a country where the President simply does what is in his best financial and personal interests no matter what the cost to Americans. I am hoping to move outside the US to a more politically acceptable country, where I feel safer, not from terrorists, but from my own government. Is banking heavily controlled, or are there any good privacy laws regarding banking?

Banking Privacy

My belief is that banks here are much less private than the United States. I have a few […]

Old Bread and Memories of a Gluton

June 29, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

The French have their pain perdu, those folks in the states their french toast, in fact you would would probably be hard pressed to find a country that lacked a tasty way of using up the left over odds and ends of bread.
Come on, you know you have some, those last stale pieces lurking in the back of the bread drawer? It seems the better, the fresher, the more home-style delicious the loaf, the faster it seems to go rock-solid, and all the more reason to find your favorite way to re-incarnate it into something you can cherish.
Unlike most card carrying Brits I had never tried a proper bread and butter pudding until I was in my teens. On holiday with my Grans in wales, we stopped off at a little pub, and after a side-splittingly delicious meal I was faced with the most heavenly mound of bread pudding ever […]

Viveza Criolla

June 28, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

My post today is about viveza criolla and how mostly all foreigners here bag Argentina as a very dishonest place to do business which is utter crap and very damaging to the countries image.
Viveza criolla is human nature and to say that portenos are a step above most other countries like united states Australia and most of Europe is a fantasy.
In all the years I have been coming here the most dishonest things that have happened to me have been being ripped off by taxi drivers by a few pesos .
I’m sure that bribes happen but I accept that and deal with it.
In Australia which people believe to be paradise .I clocked up 3000 dollars in fines just for parking and also the police in Australia are known for their heavy handed attitude.
People of the lower classes in Buenos Aires in the main are kind honest and trustworthy and […]

Why did I come here again? Oh yeah, to dance tang…

June 27, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

Why did I come here again?
Oh yeah, to dance tango. And the one good thing going on in my life right now is that Ruben and I are Finalistas in the Campeonato Metropolitano de Tango, which will take place in La Rural here in Buenos Aires on August 18, 2006.
But let me tell you about my problem: finding a place to live. I moved here early in 2004 from Mexico, took a tourist apartment for 3 months, and then was lucky enough to find a beautiful apartment that suited me and my cat, Phoebe, because the owner was my Spanish teacher’s father. OK, so far, so good. Sure, I had to completely rewire and install a modern heater and fix the plumbing, and totally furnish the place from lighting fixtures to toilet, but, well, that was the way I wanted to live. Also, as a foreigner without the famous “Garantia” […]

A baby boy? after this email nooooooo

June 27, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

I have been trying, through coughs, hacks, and runny nose to get some more posts done. Of course some of you already know, and now the rest of you will too, when us preggie women are sick the med cabinet is off limits. Actually every time I reach for that cabinet door it seems the husband is right there to say, "no, no, no, you know you can’t have that Nyquil." ugh if I ever wanted to beat someone up just to get my hands on something it’s at those moments.
Well, in the spirit of keeping me upbeat, my good friend Veronica, who is CONVINCED we’re  having a boy (sorry Veronica, now that I’m sick we have to reschedule the CVS and hold off for another week or so knowing the sex of the baby ;-)), has sent me a funny email about boys.  If I ever wondered why […]

Futbol Hangover?

June 25, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

Is there such a thing as a futbol hangover? After last night’s game I am numb to today’s matches. England-Ecuador looked positively boring and disorganized. Although red cards flew for Portugal and Holland I was unable or unwilling to engage. Both of us feel like we’d put in a full day in the corral.
120 minutes of agony and ecstasy.
Well one nice thing about not giving much of a damn about today action was ignoring it in a little Palermo cafe with Cinta and Ian of the Good Airs blog. Wonderful people. Make sure you look in on their blog.

Rafael: Stud

June 24, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

Eight men, brave and true. Including meself, a course. We all stuck our necks out and kept our wallets in (so as not to contravene applicable legislation passed in our various domains.) I was joined by the following: Steve Smith, joejoejoe, Steve Gilliard, kb, iceman, Tug, and Rafael …in order of bravery.
Wonderfully surprising results! First, let’s get to the method of scoring: 3pts were awarded for picking the 1st and 2nd place teams in order. 1pt was awarded if you got one of the advancing two teams in your prediction. That’s it. Therefore, if you got both teams right but in the wrong order you got 2pts.
The Champ deserves first mention… especially since he whupped all of us and didn’t even bother to make a pick for Group H! Rafael, who I assume is a fellow yankee because of his only one-pointer (ITA-USA), bested us with 18 points. His […]

The World Cup Effect

June 24, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

After more than a month, the blog continues with another post on the World Cup. If you’re in Argentina right now, you already know about this, but if not, you may be a little surprised about just how intense the effect of the World Cup is on this country.

If you wanted to plan a bank robbery here in Buenos Aires, the best time to do it would certainly be during a World Cup match. When you left the bank, your getaway car would be easily able to speed away because the streets are totally empty. During a World Cup match, the entire country is indoors next to whatever television they can find. You could literally run naked down the streets during the World Cup and nobody would notice or care.

Work comes to a halt as well. This goes for people in my office as well. Everyone made it clear to […]
