Finally Finding a Computer Problem Soluation

I have been trying to fix my internet connection for the last two months, at least. Back then, some kind of virus invaded, and after getting it fixed, everything worked as always except the ability to access secure internet sites, such as my bank, mail service, and online mail-order sites. I estimate that I’ve spent perhaps 100 or more hours trying to find out how to fix my internet/brower settings so as to be able to get back into the secure sites. Meanwhile, to check my bank account or do similar things, I had to go to a nearby locutorio (internet/long distance phone place) and use one of their machines. This is/was certainly not onerous, but it’s much more convenient to do it all from home.
Today I returned for perhaps the 20th time to the good ol’ Microsoft “fix-it” site and tried once again. I […]

June 2006 Notes

It’s been awhile, so I thought I’d spend a cool Argentine morning updating things. You’ll notice in the way the blog is set up that until this point the entries don’t seem exactly chronological; if so, it’s because I did a cut-and-paste action to bring various items I’d sent as regular e-mails into the blog.
The biggest thing in Argentina right now is the World Cup games going on in Germany, and as I write Argentina is starting to look good at least as a finalist and perhaps as champion, although it’s always dangerous to suggest that! At least the bookies in London have changed the odds a lot to make it harder to win lots of money on the team.
The games are seen here on satellite television at 10 a.m. and 1 and 4 p.m., which means it’s pretty much a daytime thing, and as a result, the local school […]
Feedburner icon and syndication
June 19, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments
The syndication of information has become a hot item for people who
blog, as it offers a means for readers to easily track updates without
necessarily having to visit the site to check for new posts. For
instance sites such as Bloglines offer the ability to track not just
blogs, but major news and articles as well, in a single site. It’s
almost like having a personalized newspaper where you can follow news
that is of interest to you. I use it as a way to track all of my
favorite topics.
If you are interested in having the content sent to you when I’ve
updated the site, simply click on the little orange icon and you’ll be
redirected to the Feedburner site where you can decide which of the
readers you would like to utilize. Have a try at this handy little
helper.
Expo-Apic: A festival of yum
June 17, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments
This Thursday through Sunday, on the river Parana, is the most delicious Expo a food lover could dream of. Expo-Apic it is called here in Corrientes and rural artisans, business men and mate growers head from all over Argentina to this little corner of Corrientes to show their wears.
I paid my 4 pesos entrance fee and maneuvered my way around the muddy ponds left by the morning rain, and waltzed into the awakening grounds. Not every booth had been set up, so my man and I decided to take a tour before doing any heavy buying.
The first few booths were made up of fabric softeners, a display on breast milk that would have made my midwife friend back in Seattle very proud, and ponchos brought up from Patagonia made of undyed wool and spun into some amazing patterns. We walked around elaborate silver mate cups, leather hats and jackets and […]
“Plan on 9am meetings” Sí, Juan
June 16, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments
Ok. Just to recap my “Day 1″ story from el mundial here in the argentine metropolis:
As I ed on Steve’s blog in response to his post that you won’t be able to conduct business in Europe and Asia this month, “Hey! Just try it in South America!” I told the story of my having scheduled a business meeting at the same hour of the first game of the cup. We blew off the meeting…and tried to order empanadas to eat while watching TV. We were told it would be a 90 minute wait. First day, first game, no bidness, no empanadas cookin’ in Buenos Aires!!!
Steve sagely counseled me,
“yanqui mike,
It’s the time differential. A lot of business with London takes place between 8-9 here. Which is when matches kick off.
Get the fixtures, and plan for 9 Am meetings”
So…here my story from today: my wife and I scheduled […]

Argentina is the new El Dorado for stressed out New Yorkers
June 12, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments
Today is a cold and cloudy actually my favourite weather for being inside and enjoying a book and catching up on my Argentine vocabulary.
I have been living here 8 months now since October 2005 and has it been a challenge.Moving to another country is much harder than anyone says especially one where the native language is not your own.
I have wanted to live in Argentina for as long as I can remember from the first trip here in 1983 to many trips over the years there was a very strange pull to this place that made me want more and more.
Nowadays it seems that Buenos Aires is the hot spot for New Yorkers and stressed out Americans wanting to escape George Bush high real estate prices and the fear of terrorism.
I have to say I have good feelings about this movement overall as I believe that in time that […]
