Seeing poverty in Argentina and seeing change.According to some statistics (and stats are unreliable in Argentina) when I first came to Argentina the country was in pretty bad shape.
Unemployment, 27%Living below poverty line, 60%
(Keep in mind the poverty line in Argentina is not what the poverty line is in the US. In some cases poverty can mean you are starving to death in Argentina. )But I never had to pay much attention to the stats because I could see it with my eyes. There were children begging for food and coins pretty much everywhere. Even in the tourist haven of Bariloche at the front of the supermarkets there were children begging.
Obviously coming from the US this was a shock.
In the US you see these things sometimes from other places in the world on TV. Of course seeing this on TV allows one to easily dismiss it. It is not so […]

How Much Money Do You Need To Live in Argentina?

July 27, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

I often get the question, “How much money do I need to live in Argentina?” The answer is, and always will be, “it depends.” There’s no correct answer because different people need different amounts to live on.

Reader’s Question

I have lived and loved Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Illinois, but I’m ready for the smells and foods and the extended family I left in BA fifty years ago. My social security and pension stink. I spent a couple of my smaller pensions on medical issues about six years ago, so I doubt that I’ll have more than $800 – 900 monthly to live on if I retire now. I frankly don’t want to wait much longer. I’d have to wait to age 66 to receive any more from Social Security. Can a person live on that amount renting an apartment in a safe and secure area? It’s not a […]

Bienvenida Argentina!OR “Toto, I don’t think we are in Kansas anymore.”When I first came to Argentina I never spoke one word of Spanish. Well, I could say “Hola” but for sure I couldn’t put 3 words together. Had no real idea of what life was like here besides reading a few books and internet sites. All of which do not give an accurate description of life here, nor do they prepare you for life here. You see most of the people writing this stuff come from the upper crusts of their particular countries. Upon arriving in Argentina (with a boatload of cash and other securities) these people instantly begin setting up barriers and obstacles to isolate themselves from the Argentine society. Once they have their well cushoned cacoon in place they sit back and proudly proclaim to be fully integrated into Argentine society, almost damn near an Argentine. After this […]

THEUNCOOLHUNTER.COM

A new site for the uncool, bizarre and “off” culture have been launched.

The manifesto of the website says;
Someone asked Dalí. What’s fashionable? And he answered; “What is out of fashion. Taking into account this postulate a group of observers intend to glimpse a vanguard in the anti global no trends. Our goal is to observe everyday life and point out the uncool circuits, the anti hegemonic culture. From an objective and sharp look of the no trends, we want to make this “off” culture known because it is left aside by whatit seems to be emergent.

How safe is Argentina? Not very safe. Argentina i…

How safe is Argentina?Not very safe. Argentina is very much a dangerous place. Take all those crime statistics you looked up and articles you read and put them in your ass because they mean jack shit. I would venture to say 25% of all crimes in Argentina go unreported, with a higher percentage being “lost” at the police station. The reason for this is many times the police are the ones behind the crimes.
Another thing that makes Argentina dangerous is crime is not localized in certain areas. In the states you can be in niggerville and know your in a fairly dangerous area. Go to the suburbs and you can know your in a fairly safe area. This is not the situation in Argentina. There are no safe areas. There are the extremely dangerous areas and the not so dangerous areas. You will find in rich “barrios” bars on the […]

soccer game and guessing game answer

July 18, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

so, the big winner for the guessing game competition was jennifer strange, although the competition wasnt very stiff as she submitted the only guess. last thursday the people came over to bible study at 8. we ate dinner from 11 to 12, then talked for another hour and a half… so they ended up leaving at 1:30 am. not too bad for Argentina. Last night we got another chance to play 7 on 7 soccer. We had a good mix of people, including 1 brazilian and 1 swedish guy. 2 players got hurt, so we ended up playing 6 on 6. My team won 3 to 2 and i scored my first goal. On one corner kick, i kicked the ball and a guy headed it in to the net.. that to me was more fun than scoring the goal. We […]

Tourism in Mp3 format
In Buenos Aires nowadays you don`t need a touristic guide to introduce yourself in history and touristic places. The Buenos Aires’ government in his website bue.gov.ar launched a guide series with famous voices of journalists, writers, actors, and social communicators. The guides tell about streets and building stories of the Capital of Argentina.
12 circuit stops could be choice in the website. Plaza de Mayo (by Mario Pergolini), Palermo Viejo (by Magdalena Ruíz Guiñazú) , Puerto Madero (by Nacha Guevara), Abasto (by Antonio Carrizo), La Boca (by Eduardo de la Puente).
Every journey have a map to be print.
Description of La Boca circuits stops;

1 - La Boca neighborhood.
A neighborhood unique in its architecture and its culture. Historians explain the origins of an area filled with immigrants, tenement houses and football.

Mother-in-law Apple Cake

July 16, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

My Fiance´s mother, Marina quite often makes the most remarkable little cake when I come over. Her 4 boys and I have to fight over it, with that many people in a house it tends to be first come first serve, or rather stuff yourself now because there is no such thing as left overs!
Don´t tell but I have been know to eat as many as three pieces at a time, with ice cream!
The amazing part of the cake is not the soft, buttery cake itself but the layer of apples which when baked turned into a tangy compote with compliments the sweetness of the cake like nothing else. Marina serves it with a scoop of cool vanilla ice cream while the cake is still warm, though my advice is, if you have an ice cream maker, I would throw in some vanilla yogurt and have that instead, the tang […]
