things i´ve noticed…

obviously there are a lot of cultural differences between iowa and argentina - go figure i doubt i´ll be able to remember what i was going to say, but that´s life for youat my school, the kids stay in the classroom and the teachers switch rooms. the school has a bunch of classes around a big square in the middle where it´s just open space, and has a lot of junk…like trash - they just throw their trash on the ground here. for example, if you were eating a sucker or drinking a juice box, after you got done…you would throw it on the ground (or the floor if you´re in the classroom)also, most families only have one car if any — so like in my host family, there´s two teenagers and two parents who can drive and they all share one car! this is so opposite of life […]

So, they have tons of parties here….like there´s been one every night since Friday. Friday was my welcome Rotary dinner at the house, Saturday was the opening of the new disco in town, Sunday was just lots of family over, Monday was a live band at the club, Tuesday the same, and there´s another dance at the club tonight. Today is the town celebration…there´s lots of people in the plaza, and they have a carnival type thing set up across the street. Currently, there´s like 30 or so people over at the house to celebrate, I think it´s tradition that my host family has friends over on this day to eat, sing, and whatever else. There´s people playing guitars, some other instrument, and there´s also a really famous singer of chamame (?) which is a specific kind of music native to our area; there´s also a type of dance that […]

Wow.
I now understand why many foreigners think that Australia is some kind of distant dreamland. In Argentina everything is insecure. 24% of the population are […]

Fui a trabajar hoy. Salgo.I went to work toay. It was a “normal” day, that is like:1. Arrive.2. Listen to conference call. (We have this every […]

I didn’t go to work because I still have a cold. I slept most of the day, but the time arrived that had to go downstairs to find food. In the process, I found a small protest around the corner from my house. Basically Argentina and Uruguay share a border to the north, and Uruguay wants to start paper factories, but the Argentines from the area say that the factories with pollute the rivers. Siempre me gusta una protesta buena, […]
Those Sociable, Friendly Argentinians
August 23, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments
Finally we have objective proof that Argentines are the most sociable folks in the world.
Well, at any rate, they have more contacts listed in their Plaxo email address book than other nationals, according to a recent survey by the “smart address book” company. Argentina led the “Connected Index” with an average of 479 contacts per address book, nearly 100 more than second-place Australia. The US, tied in 29th place with the Dominican Republic, trailed with a mere 293 contacts.
Frankly, I wasn’t surprised. This has always seemed to me to be a country of friends. Sure, family ties matter too, but the role of friends here seems more central than in the US. Folks know how to make them and keep them!In fact, the extraverted nature of so many here helped induce me to immigrate. No longer is it up to me to start or keep a conversation going—everyone […]
