well, we had our first retreat this past weekend. it was good except at night i thought i was gonna freeze. we have a friend named lichi (thats a nickname) who has a cabin in a nice place that is about 45 minutes outside of town. 8 of us, plus baby Coen, went there on saturday and sunday. We ate like kings, because one guy named cello (short for marcello) went to chef school. He prepared the best homeade pizzas on the planet. other than eating and hanging out by the fire, we did a lot of relaxing, with some nature walks mixed in.. and some singing and devotional time too.in other news, my friend javier moved last night. Almost Spring, September 2006

September 18, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

Of course, spring here begins September 21! It is somewhat difficult to become a Southern Hemisphere person if you weren’t born or raised here. Even after a year, I still get it confused and subconsciously, as September moves on, somehow expect the weather to become colder rather than warmer. And when Summer comes, officially, on December 21, it’s hot as can be and Christmas and New Year’s are upon us. Strange, strange. When anyone says “January” here, it means “hot.”
The Awful Castilian Language (with apologies to Sam Clemens): Meanwhile, it’s been a wonderfully interesting time since my last missive, although nothing of an earth-shaking nature has occurred; rather, it has been sort of normal life in a normal situation, with lots of things going on and lots of things to do, and always, always, trying to pick up more and more Castellano words, phrases, and locutions. In case it looks like the spring roundup was just lying around in the flowers with a camera, let me assure you that there are few places on my body that do not hurt. Our gauchos, Miguel and Gabriel have me by 20 years from the git-go and I did my best to keep up with them (sissy yanqui is the one wearing gloves.)

This was a real surprise. These are the blossoms of a huge bay laurel bush that grows in front of the casco.
So strange and incredibly sweet and strangly herbal and complex and CRAZY was the perfume that it filled the air with…I was tempted to pick every last one of them and brew-up a perfume or a liqueur.
16,000 provincial honey bees whispered in unison that I was insane.

A bit of a breeze kept this beauty out of perfect focus but she’s almost more alluring that way.
These irises are so dense at the “back” of the house that you can see their rhizomes along the whole wall…as thick as the fresh ginger at Disco!
The old heirloom types are big on perfume but so short-lived that Mamá didn’t even remember having seen them before.

Clocking in at flower fifth but not least is Mamá resplendant in some beautiful white sweater that she probably knitted herself…soaking in some exquisite rays while discussing the details of this year’s Spring Roundup with her daughter. (Strange Yanqui yerno lies on the ground with a camera much to her dismay.)
