Thanksgiving in Buenos Aires

November 30, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

Last Thursday I celebrated my first Thanksgiving in Buenos Aires with my Argentine friends and with 1 reader of this blog. It was an interesting experience to share a piece of Americana with Argentines and explain to them the significance of Thanksgiving. I also found that it was a good opportunity to give thanks to all my friends here who’ve made me feel so welcome and helped me integrate into the society.

Get Your Turkey Early

After celebrating my first Thanksgiving here, I can offer some advice to others… a few lessons learned. First off, its not so easy to find a turkey unless you go EARLY. I remember seeing two huge tubs filled with frozen turkeys at the Jumbo supermarket in Palermo. There were probably 100 turkeys total. What I didn’t know is that after they sold those 100 turkeys, there were no more! I returned to Jumbo two days before […]

so I said my life was predictable…I lied

November 30, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

well, today started out like anyother day… got up around 10:30, got ready, ate breakfast, got online until lunch came at 12:30, then went to school. the first teacher didn’t come or we didn’t have to do anything or something, so we had 1.5 hours to do whatever, which meant Ceci, Ana, I just talked outside and drank coke. the next teacher only needed the kids who hadn’t taken the test since they were in Brazil. thus, ceci, ana, and I escaped and walked the backroads to ceci’s house where ana worked on their project, we watched Taxi, drank terere, ate cookies, and relaxed in a/c (so, in Iowa we get out for heat….apparently they don’t believe in that here) ana went back to school for some class around 5, but we stayed and watched Bicentennial Man — completely in Spanish, but I actually understood almost all of it […]

TIERRA SANTA? THANKS, I THINK I’LL GOLF INSTEAD

Awhile back, while I was still living in beautiful San Diego and Chico was already in Buenos Aires, he phoned me to tell me he was going to Tierra Santa, a religious theme park. I cannot fully express how great I thought this was, and how badly I wanted to go the second I arrived. I had Chico describe the entire park in great detail on numerous occasions which only quantified my want and need for Tierra Santa. So time went by, I moved to Buenos Aires, and the perfect day fell upon us. We convinced our friend, Mark that this was going to be fun and dragged him out of bed early one Tuesday for the cab ride across town. The cab dropped us off in front of the Pearly Gates that separated us from the giant statue of Jesus rising out […]

November 29, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

wow, well I was going to write about my 3 week trip, but things were crazy and I kept putting it off and then I just didn’t blog for practically a month since I was still planning on blogging about my trip. however, if I don’t blog now, I’ll never get around to it, so here it goes….
Thursday, I went to Corrientes via cumbi or the short bus if you’d rather and got there around 2:30 pm. I don’t remember exactly what I did, but I think I ended up waiting for Erica to come over and then we went shopping for a dress for my graduation. then we rushed home because Erica really wanted to watch the O.C. and I don’t watch it, so I made dinner (that’s right…I cooked Mom hehe) Well, it wasn’t very good considering the apartment never has food and I had […]

Frontier Living

November 27, 2006 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

Okay, so Argentina is not the Third World, but sometimes it gets pretty close. Especially the farther you get from Grand Buenos Aires. Each kilometer takes you miles and years away from the 21st Century.
You could call this frontier living. Not exactly Little House on the Pampa, even though we do have gauchos and horses roaming about.
But I have to give up a major illusion. I cannot recreate the First World here in my little corner of South America.
It has finally dawned on me that what has frustrated me most over the last couple years is this: attempting to continue to live “modernly” where the infrastructure just doesn’t permit it.
Looks can be deceiving. There are cars, telephones, cell phones, televisions, airplanes, electricity and indoor plumbing, and why, two years ago the first shopping centers materialized in the nearby metropolis of Rosario, offering all the […]
