Back home in Buenos Aires
January 31, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments
Its been a while since my last blog and hope that all my readers are well and had a great holiday season.
I spent some time with friends in Colonia Uruguay which I loved and found the town peaceful and beautifully located on the rio de la plata.
I am back in Palermo Viejo now and this area seems to be getting busier and livelier by the day . The feel of the streets is very light and happy and the restaurants seem to be bursting at the seams.I have been trying some great new restaurants went to Casa Cruz for the first recently and found it very expensive with minute servings but the atmosphere was excellent and the food though small in portions exquisite . Try the king crab centolla ravioli it is easily the best pasta dish I have had in Buenos Aires . Also I […]
Filming in San Telmo
January 31, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments
Seems like more and more film crews are popping up in San Telmo. Whether they’re for commercials or movies, I don’t know. Coming back from Walrus Books late Sunday afternoon we saw that the corner of a popular tourist hangout, Bar El Federal, had been transformed into a piece of London.
We came across the site just as the final scene was being filmed. There’s the black taxi from London and the actress in a hooded black outfit. Off to the left was a guy holding a water hose that produced the “rain”.
And notice the fake street sign on the side of Bar El Federal as calle Perú momentarily became Peter Street, City of Westminster.
Ana (By Ken)

Tonight we met our patroness, Ana, the woman from whom we are renting the apartment. She stopped by to see how we were doing after just returing from the United States where she was visiting her two sons in Atlanta and Chicago.
.
We had a lovely discussion about the city and the country–the politics, the history. We shared a bottle of Malbec and she helped us study for tomorrow´s Spanish final exam.
.
She is a lovely and intelligent woman with whom we spend a very pleasant evening. I hope we see more of her. She is an excellent speaker of English and a very patient tutor of Spanish. Spending the evening speaking Spanish with her was a very different experience than our three-hour classes at UBA where–let´s just say it´s not always pleasant and relaxed.
.
ON to the post office
.
We had a very different experience today that was actually not as bad as […]

LA CHACARERA CONTINUED AND OTHER ARGENTINE FOLKDANCES
Recently housebound after falling in Pilates class and breaking two ribs, I’ve been watching a lot of television. Last week I came across this fabulous show from Salta, Argentina. I was enthralled.
I have been studying La Chacarera and La Zamba (which is the national dance of Argentina, not tango), and plan on learning lots more: Escondido, Gato, well I don’t even know how much more there are. But they are FUN!
After the Salta Ballet performance was over, I checked the credits for contact info: balletsalta@hotmail.com
To make a short story shorter, I bought two instructional DVDs of “Bailemos Folklore con Marina y Hugo Jimenez.” They are fabulous! Entertaining to watch with performance clips and also with excellent instruction. Both volumes include lots of zapateos (rhythmic footwork) how-tos for both men and women.
The Chacarera is really fun, and easy to learn, but my real passion […]
The secrets of Isabel Perón
January 31, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments
If you’ve been following the news, you’ll undoubtedly know that judicial proceedings are being started (or resumed) to investigate and punish criminals of the Dirty War, particularly a number of military and police officers that did such nice things as running illegal detention centers, overseeing and conducting torture sessions of political prisoners, and the like. The first of these was Julio Simón, aka “El Turco Julián”; the second was Miguel Etchecolatz. The trial of Cristian Von Wernich, a torturer priest and chaplain, is another example, as well as the arrest of the former Navy officer Alfredo Astiz, “the Blond Angel of Death”.
The Dirty War, however, did not only include the crimes committed under the dictatorship that began in 1976. Its preliminaries can be located already under the third term of Juan Domingo Perón, which began in 1973 after his return from exile and was interrupted by his death in 1974. […]
The Story of Gnocchi Day in Argentina
January 31, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments
It is approaching the end of the month, you are hungry, and you find yourself looking for a delicious alternative to the asado. Look at your calendar. Is it the 29th? If so, you are in luck! It is the official Gnocchi Day in Argentina.
You may be asking yourself what gnocchi even is. It is not a typical part of the North American cuisine but can be found in some restaurants. Look on the menu of any Italian restaurant and you are bound to find these amazing little potato dumplings that are turned into a pasta. The Europeans brought many of their influences to Argentina and one of their great contributions was the gnocchi. Apparently Argentineans were pretty impressed with this food because it not only received its own day of the year, it received its own 12 days of the […]
