The Best Contemporary Novels in Spanish
March 31, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments
It’s easy to identify the classic writers in any language but learning about the respected contemporary writers is much more difficult. The SPLALit blog has posted a listing of the best 100 novels written in Spanish during the past 25 years.
The list is based on an article written by Semana, a Colombian magazine.
Of the 100 titles there are 22 books by Argentine writers. Only Spain had more titles (32) in the top 100. Colombia was third with 13 titles.
The Argentine writers
Okay, now I will be the first to admit that I’ve not read any of these books! In fact, of these 16 Argentine authors there are 7 that are new to me. The striking thing is how little is known in the English-speaking countries about so much world literature. In another post I’ll talk about the lack of translation for most of the titles. […]
Some American couples…
March 31, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments
Is not that I hang with middle age couples a lot; but I`ve met a bunch and I`ve been dedicating some of my time to study them. I`m not happy with what I found out ; but here are the conclusions…
Women are bitchesandMen are retarded
It`s sad to discover something like his. Please guys, tell me that this only happens in the older generations (40-60) and now women are no longer obsessive, possessive, control freaks and bitches and men are not narrow minded money making robots with no interests in anything. Please!!!!Ok, you are probably thinking: “she is saying that because she belongs to a macho culture” but NO The only difference between an Argentinian couple and an American couple is that in America; the Macho is the women. Know I know why a lot of guys in their 40´s or 50´s post ads on craig`s list saying that they will travel […]
End of the wait?

I don’t usually write on Saturdays, but this will be brief anyway. Yesterday after I came home, I learned that the Ludueña Stream was on the brink of overflowing. It was drizzling all afternoon. At about 5:30 PM my mother, my aunt and I went to check the stream by ourselves. We walked about 10–12 blocks from home and saw this:
As you surely noticed, there were other watching as well (in fact, a crowd). The stream comes from the west of the city in a canal, and at this point it is piped underground. The pipes were built in the 1990s. I don’t remember the exact date, but I do remember myself as a teen watching a huge hole with several excavators working down there to make room for the pipes.
After this we walked another 10 or so blocks east, towards the river. A few hundred meters before the mouth […]

Farewell Club Español

Caroline informed me of the closing of the milonga Chique at Club Español. I am truly depressed. Chique was my favorite milonga! Anyhow I leave you with the milonga review I had written for a website on Buenos Aires, since we won´t be publishing it now, you may as well read it here.
Well I am finally off to Uruguay for a few days. Vamos a la playa! We are going to the beach! And of course it is RAINING! Alas I just need a change of scene and fresh air.
Un Beso,Miss Tango
This afternoon once a week event is not to be missed! Chique also known simply as Club Español because of the location, is renowned as ¨The Milonga most Elegant of Buenos Aires¨, and it most certainly is! The milonga is located in a gorgeous yet eclectic Spanish art nouveau building, still impeccably maintained, designed by dutch architect […]

When I’ve been able to do the occasional tour & avoid the torrential rains of the last 5 days, I noticed that Casa Rosada restoration works are almost complete. They might make the 25 May deadline after all. The northern façade is the only one with scaffolding & is almost complete. Most of the upcoming work will be new pavement & completion of the fence. The new color looks fantastic, but I’ll post better pics when we finally get a sunny day:
Getting closer, I saw that the entire lower section of the building has been removed. What’s visible is fascinating… if you know how to look at it. Squint a little & you can see that there are two distinct layers of brickwork:
The explanation is far from simple. The Casa Rosada is an amalgam of 2 different buildings, & those were built on top of remnants of the town fortress. […]
Pay Day

When I started this business I received a lot of warnings about dealing with locals from the locals that I already knew. Porteños will rob you as sure as rain and you can’t trust any of them where the main messages.
I was pleasantly surprised to find out just the opposite in most cases. Business people are business people and it’s just not good business going around cheating people. If you cheat people word will get out and you will not be able to grow and prosper. In fact, I had heard some disturbing things about one of my current clients before they became my clients.
I did not approach Al Queso, queso right away because I had heard some rumors about them. This client is a cheese, cold cuts and wine shop. They also have some imported beers and other gourmand delicacies. On hindsight I should have investigated a bit further. […]
The deluge continues but so does life

This should’ve been out yesterday, but the news about the flood were more important, so I’m posting it now and updating it.
Wednesday was a long day. I woke up early as I normally do, had a shower, got dressed, and had breakfast, all of it oblivious to the rain — I thought it would be raining lightly and I could run for the bus with minor wetting. Then my father came and asked, “Did you take a look outside already? I think you can’t get out.” There was enough water in the street to row a small boat. I waited to see if the rain stopped but it got worse, so I phoned work to let them know. They said no problem. I checked to see if I had Internet access and wrote for this blog… In the process I read all the papers, while I listened to Radio 2 […]
Bye Bye BBC, Chau CNN
March 30, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments
As being discussed extensively on the BANEWCOMERS list, I checked my cable and found that the BBC and CNN channels are no longer available. Evidently, the cable companies have decided to charge extra for those channels or, perhaps, no longer offering those at all…I’m not sure…anyway, CNN International isn’t very good and the cable company was always pre-empting BBC for Senado TV.
Fortunately, I’ve started to watch most of my news on the Net. There’s so many offerings online now that cable TV news isn’t so useful. Also, for those who haven’t discovered, a lot of the U.S. networks have their prime-time programming available online. Yes, it’s supposedly block to users outside the U.S. but there are a lot of open Web proxies in the U.S. that you can use to circumvent that restriction.
An observation: in Bogota the cable TV service is much better than Buenos Aires. Not only […]
