Restaurant Lo de Jesús

June 30, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

Last night I had dinner at Lo de Jesús, a shabby kitsch parrilla located at the corner of Gurruchaga and Cabrera. We ordered “callos a la madrileña”, tenderloin, grilled vegetables, a mix of different types of champignons with parsley & garlic and ravioli. Service was outstanding. All portions were large (except the pasta) and delicious. The atmosphere was very pleasant. Check out their menu here.*Anoche cené en Lo de Jesús, una parrilla “shabby kitsch” ubicada en la esquina de Gurruchaga y Cabrera. Buenos Aires Property Finder Cheat-sheet

June 30, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

For those of you readers interested in BA property we decided it would be a good idea to put together a quick reference ‘cheat-sheet’ for how to find properties in the city… so here are some of the best links for doing that…
To orientate yourself, this is great map of the city (you can plug in any address to find the location): http://mapa.buenosaires.gov.ar/sig/index.phtml
This website features the Multi-Listing Service (MLS) of Argentine property: http://www.topinmobiliario.com/
The problem is that many properties are not added to the MLS. So here are some of the top sites and agencies for the more popular areas (most have listings across the city):
Recoleta
http://www.realestate.com.ar (Probably the best agency in BA)
http://www.toribioachaval.com.ar/
Palermo
http://ojopropiedades.com.ar/
http://www.shenk.com.ar/
http://fastpropiedades.com/
http://www.enbuenosaires.com/
San Telmo
http://www.leticiafirpo.com/venta.php?criterio=precio
This is a good list of available ‘casas’ across the city: http://www.leporepropiedades.com.ar/SOM/vta_casas.htm
Buenos Aires Craigslist has many interesting and new listings. If you have some Spanish language knowledge La Nacion classifieds  and the Clarin classifieds are good.
A recommended resource is the Argentina: […]

Opera Pampa

June 30, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

Last night we went with some Porteno friends to the Opera Pampa show at La Rural. As usual we had no idea what it was we were going to see, and our assumption that it was an ‘opera’ in the traditional sense was completely faulty…
Instead it was a live action theater production telling the story of Argentine history through song, dance, battle reenactments, and impressive horseback-riding…
La Rural, situated next to the US Embassy in Palermo, is a nicely restored complex that was once a sort of livestock convention arena… It has some stands that surround a rectangular riding rink and stage. From the stands we watched the dancers and horseman act out various stages in the taming of the pampas and the establishment of Argentina.
We had a pretty good general idea of how Argentina was founded and this show confirmed our view of how similar it was to the founding of […]

AND EVERYTHING NICE! Frank Almeida hosted a Blo…

AND EVERYTHING NICE!
Frank Almeida hosted a Blogger Fest last Thursday at his beautiful cookie shop in Palermo, Sugar and Spice. It was a glorious day, and it was such fun to squeeze into the colorful store and be surrounded by incredible edibles and fun people, previously only acquainted in cyberspace.
I don’t have a camera, so I’ll have to steal some photos from other bloggers, but here we are, yakking with our mouths full of yummy crumbs: Stephen (from the new expat magazine, BAinsider), Marcela, Alan, Nathan, Diva (with a frog), Frank, me & Sarah (BAinsider).Since blogging is a solitary pursuit, it did me in particular a lot of good to connect with like minded folks. Life is not lived by Tangazos alone!

Sugar and Spice Cookies

June 29, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

Guatemala 5415 (& Av. Juan B Justo), Palermo Hollywood

Out of the very few strict life rules that I subscribe to, the most important happens to be: “when in Buenos Aires, if a man gives you some delicious cookies for free, you must write about them on your blog”. My dear old grandmother used to say this when I was a child sat on her knee back in the mid-1980s. A magnificent woman, and clearly a technological visionary to boot. However, hard as she tried, she was unable to knock out of me this annoying tendency I have for making ridiculous things up.
And so, this post. Read on for more cookies and assorted photo silliness.

Sugar and Spice cookies: a great sweet snack in Buenos Aires
I have to say that [disclaimer aside: Frank gave me free cookies yesterday at the bloggers event held in his new Palermo Hollywood store/bakery, but these are […]

A Conversation with Peter Robertson

June 29, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

Last month on this blog I mentioned an interview in the high-quality literary site known as ReadySteadyBook with Scottish writer Peter Robertson who also lives in Buenos Aires. Peter and I have been corresponding by e-mail and finally had a chance to meet earlier this week over lunch at Al Carbón, which is a rather fine restaurant in the microcentro. (Why did I not bring my camera?)
I was running a few minutes late as I rode the 70 bus from San Telmo across downtown. There’s a certain point with midday traffic in the microcentro that it’s easier and quicker just to get off the bus and walk. Peter was waiting for me at Al Carbón and we then ascended the steps to the upper floor of the restaurant for our meal.
Regular readers of this blog know that I have a rather literary slant. I knew that Peter would […]

Wrapping up the campaign

June 29, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

We’re in veda electoral, that is, the common pre-election ban on political advertising, since this morning. Though next Sunday’s is just a primary election, it works like a main one and it’s equally a bother: it’s compulsory and you can’t sell (therefore can’t buy) booze the night before and during the whole day (you can buy booze beforehand and save it for Sunday, though).
In Rosario, almost exactly 700,000 people have the right and the obligation to vote; in Santa Fe as a whole, about 2.3 million. We’re selecting the candidates who will run for their respective parties in the main election in September. Until 2005 we had Ley de Lemas, a perverse system by which a candidate could win with fewer votes than most of their opponents (follow the link). In fact, with Ley de Lemas you could win with 2 votes against someone who had gotten 1 million votes, […]
