The Vines arrive from Italy!
August 31, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments
These pictures correspond to the reception of the first container of vines purchased in Italy. All the clones from Merlot, Chardonnay, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc have arrived. All the plants were un perfect conditions: with a good amount of roots and excellent state of humidity. Francisco Evangelista, our Vineyard Manager, and Diego Reina, our consultant agronomist, checked all the plants before putting them in cold store.
In the next couple of days, the second and last container will arrive.

Cultural exchange
August 31, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments
*The pictures are from a friend, arent´t they cool?
Every expat/tourist/traveller/martian/whatever is interested in having an authentic cultural exchange with the locals of the visited place, right?. That´s healthy and smart and makes you feel that you are immersed in the new culture, and not just taking advantage of the devalued currency (or whatever you could take advantage of)
However, some people don´t understand the meaning of cultural exchange. well is not that I have a phd in cultural exchange or anything, but I do know that copying is not an exchange, is thievery, is fake. And you don´t want to be a phony, right? (well maybe you do, in that case just wait till I write the “Faking porteños for dummies guide”).
It´s ok to not fit perfectly in a different culture, after all you don´t have to, it´s almost impossible. You can try to be polite, respect their rules, […]
Tango Lesson with Robert Duvall
August 31, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments
I was Googling something entirely different when I came across the chance to bid on a Tango Lesson with Robert Duvall at his Virginia farmhouse he donated for a charity fundraiser. I wonder what kind of teacher would he be? Would Robert be encouraging and patient or get exasperated with you easily? I would like to think he would promote the idea of connecting with your partner rather than simply teaching steps.

Hi!. My friends are having a Not-a-party-exactly. I don´t know how to describe it. You can dance but maybe there won´t have music all the time. And after the dancing part, they´ve prepared some performances. I´m definitely going. If you are looking for something unusual, you should check out this “party”.

My Japanese calligraphy teacher’s view of the candidates for the governor election: “There’s the guy with all that beard… and the other guy who looks like Hitler.” I had to laugh. It’s very difficult to discuss politics in a language you’re just starting to understand beyond the basics, and explaining Argentine and local politics to a foreigner from a vastly different culture is absolutely impossible. We left it at that. (Watanabe-sensei also inquired about Cristina Kirchner. I just said no.)
OK, that was just comic relief. We’re right on top of the election, and that’s a good thing, because I was getting tired of the incessant TV and radio ads, the childish taunts among grown men, the unsubtle campaign moves. If I hear the President is coming again to unveil yet another one of those hypothetical or half-finished public works that abound these days, I will lose it.
In case you didn’t […]

The Best Place to Learn Windsurfing in Argentina
August 30, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments
If you are going to learn to windsurf, you may as well learn from the best, and the best in Argentina resides in Puerto Madryn.
Once upon a time there was a Puerto Madryn native who traveled the world windsurfing. He represented Argentina in professional competitions all around the world. Eventually his professional career ended, but his passion for the sport would not fade away. So he decided to open an outdoor adventure shop along the beaches of Puerto Madryn where he could share his knowledge and skills with others.
From the patio of Vernadino restaurant you have an incredible view. It sits right on the beach with sand stretching for miles to the north and south. And straight in front is the ocean. While dining over the simple but delicious food, you may notice a group of windsurfers in the sea beyond, and a boat buzzing […]

Photography tricks, part 1
August 30, 2007 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments
I’ve taken photography up a notch as a passtime. It’s not that I’ve gotten better at it, or that I’m going professional. I would like to get a DSLR camera and sophisticated gear (last Sunday we were joking about polarizers making you popular), but that would take a lot of money and I’d feel bound to turn photography into a job of some sort to compensate. I have no intention of doing that, since turning anything into a job kills the fun, for me at least. (That’s besides the fact that I have other uses in mind for that money.) But I’ve learned some tricks, both in the field and once the pictures are already in the computer.
I wrote a post about digital photo manipulation some time ago. It concerned border enhancement (especially for buildings) through a process of detecting borders and overlaying them on the original image. Simple and […]
