Crazy Argentina, take 2

May 16, 2008 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

More about the bizarre conflict between the government and the farmers: after being all fuzzy (in her own way) and speaking of dialogue and such, la Presidenta won’t talk to the agricultural organizations “because they’ve politicized the issue” (!) and, just Clarín becomes surprisingly (shall I say suspiciously?) balanced in its coverage of the latest renewal of the strike, piquetero leader Luis D’Elía goes back to its usual self and announces a total blockade of Rosario on May 25 (Revolution Day) “to stop gorilas from entering the city”, since that’s when farmers from all around are scheduled to stage a massive demonstration here. (I told you so!)
It would be sensible to remind ourselves that Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and her minions started speaking of the farmers as right-wing coup-inciting oligarchic nuts from hell (or words to that effect) as soon as the conflict started, and even before her stubbornness let […]

don’t cry for me, pirovano

My last post about Estanislao Pirovano was way back in February, but I haven’t forgotten about him or his architecture. It’s just that the last confirmed building on my list has been under restoration since then, & the guards told me the work would be finished in a couple months. Well, this is Argentina & even though it’s May, the work is still in progress. So this is all I have to show you of the façade:

Located at Lafinur 2988, the Carabassa family mansion was remodeled by Pirovano in 1923 to incorporate many of his favorite themes: Neocolonial images, Neoplateresco & a whole lot of dragons. The building went through other uses & was eventually purchased by the Fundación Eva Perón to use as a shelter. In 2002, it was converted into a museum to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Eva’s death.
The entrance gates & the façade play off each […]

Pure Energy - Photo of the week

It’s been a while since we’ve chosen a winner but here it is: Leonardo JC with his vibrant picture form the Iguazu Falls in the Iguazu National Park. The columns of water falling and all the green that grows on rocks shows how full of life this Argentinian landscape is. This is definately a must see if you are on the land of the asado enough time to allow you a 2 day visit to Iguazu.

Man oh man…

Whadda week. Whadda week of nothing! Except for some lunch in Chinatown (I thought I was over it!) with a couple of the nicest expats you’d ever wanna meet… I’ve been in bed with some kinda low-grade flu crud.
But it’s time to rejoin the living!
First up: Come on down and hoist a cold one at Drinking Liberally Buenos Aires, Sir Will’s Pub, San Martín 678, in microcentro, near Retiro, almost at the corner of Córdoba.
Drinking Liberally is a great concept:It’s always every Thursday …so you never have to wonder when the next one is.It’s always at 7:00pm …so you never have to wonder what time it kicks-off.It’s always at Sir Will’s Pub …so you never have to wonder where it is.
Not only that! There’s no members, there’s no leadership, there’s no dues, there’s no nuthin’! Just liberals of every color and flavor and stripe […]

accidentally deleted some comments in WordPress

May 15, 2008 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

Guess I’m still getting adjusted to the WordPress 2.5 admin interface (only fellow WordPress bloggers will understand)…I just accidentally deleted the last 25 s from this blog. Damn. Sorry about that to those who left s.
I hate how the new admin dashboard interface displays the s awaiting moderation in the same list as the approved s. I’ve been too tempted to click on the select all button (like I do when I only go to the awaiting moderation screen).
Anyway back to Buenos Aires posting soon….and even more frequent backups. I also should remember to be more awake when I moderate s.

Crazy Argentina, take 1

May 14, 2008 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

Just a news scoop from today’s online newspapers, since time doesn’t permit anything else…
From Clarín, the new enemy of the people according to Kirchnerist doctrine: the government reports poverty in Argentina is down to 20.7%, while private estimates (where the price of the food basket used to calculate the poverty line is not grossly fudged) place it at close to 30%, and in the meantime, the census bureau INDEC suddenly announces that it won’t take into account the measurements of inflation outside the Greater Buenos Aires area, where the fudging is effected. In fact, the Kirchnerist mayors of Greater Buenos Aires have been ordered to send inspectors to check prices in the field and report to Commerce Secretary Guillermo Moreno, in case these “deviations from the ideal” have to be, let’s say, corrected. And while the anti-inflation brigades keep prices down in the cities, piquetero leader Luis D’Elía says he’s […]

Crazy Ideas

May 14, 2008 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

Life has been extremely busy these past five months, and is going to require a completely different post.
Tango In Her Eyes, may be the title of this blog. Tango brought me to Argentina, but it is love that kept me here. Love for the country, love for a man and the love of my family.
Argentina holds a special place in my heart, and so does my homeland Canada, but more than specific countries the love for our planet, Earth the only home we have seems to dominate my thoughts these days. I guess a huge part of this is now that Isabella is in my life, she has rebirthed more profound thoughts within me and how I relate in the world.
I like to think that I am quite aware and do my part, in trying to recycle and be as gentle to the planet as I possibly can. Yet deep […]

Pony up: Polo for Beginners in Buenos Aires

May 14, 2008 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

Inger at her beginner polo class.

Living in the capital, it is sometimes easy to forget that Argentina is not only about the Buenos Aires night life, tango, Malbec, great meat and empanadas. Yes, you will say, I know it is about estancias, nature and gauchos too.
But did you know that it is also has over a hundred years of polo tradition? That it is home to the world’s best polo players? That you can learn to play polo even if you never have ridden a horse before?
When I arrived in Argentina two years ago, I didn’t really know anything about polo. I vaguely imagined that it was a typical sport for the rich, who would sit on horses, wearing Polo Ralph Lauren and wave sticks around. And anyway, I had never even sat on a horse since I saw my little brother at the tender age of six fall off […]

borderline obsession

May 13, 2008 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

I don’t think I’ve developed a case of OCD, but some people might think so. It could be argued either way.
Because of my other blog, I try not to post much about Recoleta Cemetery here. But I’ve been spending tons of time there lately. June is approaching quickly, & I hope to be done with a master map by the end of this month. That means going through all my cemetery pix, finding the corresponding tomb in the cemetery & documenting it. What was I thinking? Last night while sitting on my coffee table (don’t worry, it’s sturdy), it looked like a map explosion:

I managed to complete a good 75% of the cemetery last night & marked the updated copy with places to check & possible tombs to add. Today I spent almost 4 hours (!) walking every inch of the place… taking a few pics but mostly confirming or […]

EL JUEGO DEL VINO

May 12, 2008 | Filed Under Argentina | No Comments

“Wine Makers” is the name for this board game. For an hour and a half you can pretend you are a prestigious winemaker with a million dollars in your pocket to spend. This great idea is presented by Gonzalo Pagés from Mendoza.”El juego del vino” would be a perfect compliment for “Loto des odeurs” .
